Stretching the resolution limit of atomic force microscopy

چکیده
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is unique in visualizing functional biomolecules aqueous solution at ~1 nm resolution. By borrowing localization methods from fluorescence microscopy, AFM has been shown to discern structural domains that may be separated by only a few Ångströms.

High Resolution Image with Multi-wall Carbon Nanotube Atomic Force Microscopy Tip (RESEARCH NOTE)
In this paper, a simple and reproducible approach for attaching the multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) to the apex of the atomic force microscope probe has been proposed. For this purpose, the dielectrophoresis method was applied due to its simple performance, cheapness and reliability. In this method, various parameters such as voltage, frequency, concentration of carbon nanotubes solution an...
متن کاملLimits of Resolution in Atomic Force Microscopy
We calculate the limits of atomic resolution of an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip probing the elastic surfa«e of graphite. Interaction energies between a «sharp" Pd tip with one apex atom and graphite are obtained from ab initio total energy calculations within the density functional formalism. The effect of long-range Van der Waals forces on the tip-substrate interaction is considered expli...
متن کاملHigh-resolution noncontact atomic force microscopy.
Progress in nanoscience and nanotechnology requires tools that enable the imaging and manipulation of matter at the atomic and molecular scale. During the last two decades or so, scanning probe-based techniques have proven to be particularly versatile in this regard. Among the various probe-based approaches, atomic force microscopy (AFM) stands out in many ways, including the total number of ci...
متن کامل5 Atomic force microscopy ’ s path to atomic resolution
We review the progress in the spatial resolution of atomic force microscopy (AFM) in vacuum. After an introduction of the basic principle and a conceptual comparison to scanning tunneling microscopy, the main challenges of AFM and the solutions that have evolved in the first twenty years of its existence are outlined. Some crucial steps along the AFM’s path towards higher resolution are discuss...
متن کاملBreaking the speed limit with atomic force microscopy
High-speed atomic force microscopy (AFM) is important for following processes that occur on sub-second timescales for studies both in biology and materials science, and also for the ability to examine large areas of a specimen at high resolution in a practical length of time. Further developments of the previously reported high-speed contact-mode AFM are described. Two instruments are presented...
